sketch

Illustration created for the Spanish historical magazine 'Desperta Ferro Especiales n.º 21 (2019)'. The scene depicted took place in Mesopotamia during the Roman-Persian wars of the 4th century AD and was described by legionnaire and historian, Ammianus Marcellinus. Ammianus, together with the rest of the Roman army, wanting to avoid the approaching Persian cavalry, placed a lighted lantern on a horse and then turned the animal loose in the opposite direction of their escape route.
